Through much of the Yucatan, you will see little houses on roadsides and at resorts. These houses were built for the Alux, a Mayan cryptozoological creature akin to some types of fae species. Short at less than four feet in height, they are said to compact and dark in color.
It is said that up to 95% of people not only believe in the Alux, but also fear it. Missing children are thought to be victims of the Alux, and many say they originated from caves deep in the jungle near Merida.
A Mayan Shaman can both summon the Alux, as well as bless people to keep the Alux at bay. It’s said that the Alux can be found hiding in Mayan ruins, and that they make a high pitched noise that sounds like a child crying.
It’s unclear what the Alux may be; there are many strange and unusual species of creatures in the jungles of Latin America. However, it seems best to show them some respect– just in case.
