Nahuel Huapi Lake is said to house the Argentine version of the Loch Ness Monster. The lake is 210 square miles with a multitude of underground tunnels that lead to the ocean. In the 1940s, Heumel Island was said to be used for nuclear experiments in the middle of the lake itself.
The lake is massive and beautiful and the island, should you venture to it, is a haunting remembrance of the Second World War, with buildings that have been retaken by the land.
While the Nahuelito is thought to be similar to Nessie, it is far more likely that the sightings of the monster are in fact waves from violent, deep seismic activity that occurs on the bottom of and below the lake.
