Saltpeter and nitrate mining– akin to slavery. The city of Iqueque was made rich by these towns. The people in La Noria suffered horribly. It is said that photos taken there often show ghosts– and that many who venture to these towns never return.
Once full of families these places are now home to immense destruction as the desert reclaims abandoned buildings and pushes the dead from the ground, littering the cemeteries with bone and broken caskets. Some bones still have clothes on, some even still have hair, due to the extremely dry conditions.
In the town of Humberstone, the Chilean government has preserved the town more than the ruins of La Noria; and it is said to be even more haunted. Humberstone’s church is still furnished, as is the school. There are rows and rows of buildings here, and people who visit claim to see the former residents’ ghosts all the time.
Paranormal investigators have caught many clear EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) here as well as strange FLIR heat signatures of full-body apparitions; this aligns with locals’ and visitors’ testimonies.
