On an island within a canal outside of Mexico City, Mexico, there are hundreds of dolls left for the spirit of a young girl who was said to have drowned there years and years ago. It’s a two hour venture down a stream by boat to reach the island. When the girl was said to have drowned, dolls were left for her spirit on the island.
Over time, the island gained a caretaker, Don Julian, who would tell his nephew Anastasio that he heard voices that called him to the water. Don Julian would later be found dead, drowned in the very same canal where the young girl was said to drown. In the exact same spot. Anastasio took over caring for the island, but preferred not to stay there as his uncle did.
Who can blame him? The island would give anyone the creeps even if they loved and collected dolls, themselves. Visitors were once told to bring traditional offerings plus a doll for the girl, to leave on the island; nine white candles, candy, and a traditional style doll. These days, however, signs warn against visitors. Maybe that’s for everyone’s best interests.
