To hear the locals speak of it, you’d think a raptor had just walked off the set of Jurassic Park and into the real world. In the Atacomba desert of Northern Chile, people are seeing a large and fierce creature that is able to run next to their vehicles and leaves people in utter terror.
The Atacomba desert is sometimes described as akin to being on the moon for how different everything is. There is active Paleontology in the region, which was once home to creatures such as the Iguanadon. In nearby Pampa Ancha, fossils have been found of three-toed dinosaurs. The way things are so starkly unreal in this area, it seems almost possible that an actual dinosaur might have somehow survived out here, picking off smaller creatures for food, such as coyotes.
It is thought that what people are actually seeing is a large Lesser Rhea– a type of flightless bird that looks something between an emu and an ostrich.
